Bassanio wants to leave for Belmont to marry Portia. But he does not have the money to meet the requirements and tests of Portia’s father and so asks his friend Antonio for help.
As Antonio did not have the money, he borrows it from Shylock, a cunning money lender and gives it to Bassanio. The contract with Shylock is that if Antonio defaults payment, Shylock will cut a pound of flesh from him.
In this role, Bassanio suits the title of ‘a lover’.
‘The Merchant of Venice’ is a 16th century play, written by William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616).
