Whenever a specified voltage is exceeded, the diode resistance gets increased, making the diode reverse biased and it acts as an open switch. Whenever the voltage applied is below the reference voltage, the diode resistance gets decreased, making the diode forward biased, and it acts as a closed switch.
When p-n is in reverse bias .
When the difference between the voltage at p side and voltage at n side is less than the cut-in voltage i.e in reverse bias condition is considered as open switch while in forward bias it is considered as closed switch.
But ,in reality diode in reverse bias offers very high resistance of the order of giga ohm and in forward bias offers small resistance of the order of ohm.
Summarizing all above we came to know that , when we use p-n junction in reverse bias it offer too much resistance , so current flow is zero and it acts like open circuit .
