If the soil s acidic and improper for cultivation, the farmers wouldn't use quicklime or slaked lime to increase the bascity of the soil.

Most of the plants grow best when pH of the soil is close to 7. If the soil is too acidic or too basic,the plants grow badly or do not grow at all.

As quick lime,slaked lime or chalk are all alkaline substances, these would be added to the soil by the farmer when soil is highly acidic.
