A soil usually becomes acidic when there is either a high peat content, iron minerals or there is some rotting vegetables. In order to reduce the acidic strength, 'liming of soil' is usually done. For this, any of the substances like slaked lime and quick lime are added to the soil since these are of basic nature.

If farmers think that his soil is more acidic than to make the the soil basic he should treats his field with quick lime ( calcium oxide ) or slaked lime(calcium hydroxide) or chalk( calcium carbonate).
