a. Old Major calls the meeting to share with the animals his dream of a utopian society without man. He believes that man is the cause of all the problems animals face, and without him, animals would be able to live freely and in comfort to the ends of their natural lives.

b. He was a wise elder, but also because he respected the farm animals, even though he was the "leader" of them. ... It was not done in a democratic way at all, because no other animals were given any say in what was written/to be followed.
