Theory of Success by Annamarie - February 2021 Scholarship Essay

Certain people believe success is strictly defined as ‘having money’ or how many material goods one obtains. Yes, it’s certainly true that one can feel cool driving a $100,000 Lamborgini or finally getting those $500 kicks, but does this really indicate one’s success? Growing up in a family that was once in a country under the Soviet regime, my outlook on life and success look quite different when compared to American families.

My family originated from a country in Eastern Europe called Ukraine, which during the 70s and 80s was occupied by Soviet forces. This was definitely not your capitalist free America. Under the tight chains of Communism, life was challenging to live through, especially as a child trying to obtain an education. For a quick insight, schools were usually buried in the cities, so just trying to reach the destination was a reach since more than half of the population lived in the rural areas. There were strict uniforms with little tolerance for foolish behavior, and if someone dared to break these rules or speak without permission, one’s hands would be burned from the hit of a simple, wooden ruler.

During these times, people were striving for as many opportunities as they could get. Having hope in a hopeless country, students such as my parents worked tirelessly to achieve perfect marks to have the chance to attend a university, but even the work spent on those sleepless nights wasn’t enough. Some were lucky enough to be granted the chance to attend college, and others were not so fortunate.

When compared to Ukraine, the US truly has numerous opportunities for any path. There are schools ranging from your elite Ivy’s like Harvard and Yale to state universities to community colleges. Nobody has to feel as though they don’t belong in a community or are the ‘lone wolf’ because here, all one needs to do is put in the motivation to achieve something.

Success is all about the chances and opportunities that one can take by the reins and make the most out of it. If you think about it, each college is unquestionably unique in its own way and offers so many chances to learn and grow not just as a student, but also as a human being. Success to me means having the privilege to attend whatever university or college I desire and using that privilege to broaden my knowledge of the world, something certain students in other countries still don’t have access to today. Through this enrichment, cultural awareness can spread from person to person, thanks to the countless chances universities will give you to improve your surrounding community and the world as a whole.

The situation that my parents experienced led me to believe that one will never have success unless that person seizes the moment to choose to do something about it. Opportunities come and go but like a shooting star, if you don’t bother to even look at the sky, you will surely miss it.
