Freedom of speech, when exercised by a know figure, has to be politically correct. This is an unwritten rule of the Indian democratic system. While the constitution permits to exercise freedom of speech, If its against the interests of the political powers, it will be severely ridiculed and one may have to pay a huge price for it. There may be innumerable instances of this, but one of the famous ones that I recollect is the Aamir Khan controversy regarding the Narmada Bachao Aandolan. The Narmada Bachao Aandolan was a group of social activists headed by Medha Patkar. These activists aimed to bring justice to the people who have been displaced due to the construction of the Narmada Dam. Aamir khan, along with director Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra, participated in demonstrations along with these activists on 14th April 2006, lending his support to the Aandolan. This was not taken too well by the Gujarat government, and his posters were burned down and his film was not allowed to release in Gujarat. Aamir voiced his opinions freely and fearlessly, an gave the cause a good media coverage. But he had to pay a price to do so. This shows the dualism that exists in the Democracy of India
