The Indian independendence Movement started with the view to end the East India Company rule and subsequesnty the British Raj. This movenebt started in 1857 and ended with Independence in 1947.

It was a mass based movenment using various sections of society and had a ideaology of being anti-colonial. The rebellion of 1857 was a large scale and aimed at the British East India Company rule. Mangal Pandey. a 29 year old sepoy was considered as a leader who striked against the British sepoys.

By 1900 the Congress emerged as an all Indian political organization. Bal Gangadhar Tilak was the first indian to embrace SWARAJ.The radicals led by Tilqak advocated civil agitation. The moderates led by leaders like Dadbhoy Naoroji wanted reform within the framework of British rule.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was a prominent leader of the nartionalist movement in South Africa. He returned to India in 1915. Gandhis vision brought millions of Indians into the movement.Gandhi made it a peaceful mass movement of non-coperation. In 1942 there emerged a Quit India Movement aim of which was civil dis -obediance. On 3rd June, 1947 Viscount Louis Mountbatton, the last Viceroy of India announced the partitioning of British India two - India & Pakistan. India became an independent country on 15th August, 1847.
