The gametophytes of Adiantum are determinate, heartshaped , usually short-lived, and not capable of asexual reproduction; vittarioid gametophytes are indeterminate, ribbon-like (only small apical portion shown), exceptionally long-lived, and capable of asexual reproduction (note propagules––gemmae––at tip).
