We have already learnt about Auxiliary Verbs in a previous chapter. Auxiliary Verbs are
helping verbs. They help to form the tenses, voices, and moods of the main verbs.
• Auxiliaries are twelve in number.
(i) be. (ii) do and (iii) have are called Primary Auxiliaries.
(i) Primary Auxiliaries. They change their forms according to the number and person
of the subject
The forms of be are: am, is, are, was, were
The forms of do are : do, does, did
The forms of have are : have, has, had
(ii) Modal Auxiliaries are :
(a) may (might) (b) can (could) (c) must (d) shall (should) (e) will (would)
(1) ought
(g) need (h) dare
(i) used (to)
Modals help to express the mood or attitude of the speaker.​
