UNIT 6 - PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, some bacteria and some protistans use the energy from sunlight to produce glucose from carbon dioxide and water. This glucose can be converted into pyruvate which releases adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by cellular respiration.Oxygen is also formed.
The conversion of usable sunlight energy into chemical energy is associated with the action of the green pigment chlorophyll. The process of photosynthesis is divided into two main parts – The first part is called the light dependent reaction. This reaction happens in the flattened sac like structures within chloroplasts which are actually green in colour, when the light energy is captured and finally stored into a chemical called ATP. The second part of the process happens when the ATP is used to make glucose also known as Calvin cycle.
Q1 the combination of water, sun and CO2 in the chloroplast of a cell of a green plantmakes –
Fructose
Glucose
Lactose
Comatose
Q2 The light dependent reaction happens in the –
Thylakoid membrane
Calvin cycle
Chloroplast
G3P
Q3 Encircle Yes or No for each statement –
Photosynthesis an exothermic reaction. Yes/No
The carbohydrate which is product of Calvin cycle is G3P. Yes/No
Q4 Why is photosynthesis so important?
Q5 The picture on the right side depicts some circles. If each small circle is one carbon atom, then can you make out the input and the out of the first reaction that corresponds to the entry of CO2 in the reaction? Also the enzyme responsible for the same.
