Fractions

Given:

  • Water storage capacity = x litres
  • Used for kitchen: 1/5 th of x litres
  • Used for bathing and washing clothers: 2/5 th of x litres

To find: Capacity of the water storage tank

Solution:

  • Used for kitchen = 1/5 * x litres = x/5 litres
  • Used for bathing and washing clothes = 2/5 * x litres = 2x/5 litres

Then remaining water = x - (x/5 + 2x/5) litres

= x - 3x/5 litres

= (5x - 3x)/5 litres

= 2x/5 litres

By the given condition,

remaining water = 200 litres

or, 2x/5 = 200

or, x = 200 * 5/2

or, x = 500

Answer: the capacity of the water storage tank is 500 litres.
