Units of Heat Capacity :

➺ The S.I. unit of heat capacity is joule per kelvin (or J K⁻¹). It is also written as joule per degree C (or J °C⁻¹).

➺ The other common units of heat capacity are cal °C⁻¹ (or cal K⁻¹) and kcal °C⁻¹ (or kcal K⁻¹).

They are related as -

  • 1 kcal °C⁻¹ = 1000 cal °C⁻¹
  • 1 cal K⁻¹ = 4.2 J K⁻¹

⚘ Note :

  • If the heat capacity of a vessel is 30 J K⁻¹, it means that 30 J heat energy is required to raise the temperature of that vessel by 1 K (or 1 °C).
