The expansion of universe is according to the predictions of General Relativity where its equations makes the universe expand at a constant rate. But recently it has been found that it is accelerating in the rate of its expansion.

The increase in the distance between two distant parts of the universe with time is call as universe expanding.The universe does not expand "into" anything and does not require space to exist "outside" it.
