The Dutch settlers of the 1600s’ were part of expansion plans of the United Province of the Dutch, known as VOC, to explore and claim uncharted areas. Gradually, Dutch settlers set up base in North America, Brazil, Chile, Caribbean, Virgin Islands, India etc.
The French on the other hand started with trying to find a new sea route to the Americas and looking at ways of making wealth. In due course, they came to settle in parts of North and South America, Canada, Caribbean, India etc.
