As ethane is a saturated compound so here the addition reaction does not takes place but ethene is an unsaturated compound and in all unsaturated compounds addition reaction takes place so this test helps you to distinguish between ethan and ethene..

HPOE IT WILL HELP YOU..

Explanation:

Bromine water : In this unsaturated hydrocarbon undergoes addition reaction with liquid bromine to give dibromo alkane as a product.one will observe the discoloration of bromine water when added to the solution of unsaturated hydrocarbon.

  • CH_2=CH_2+Br_2\rightarrow CH_2Br-CH_2Br

Color of bromine water will fade on adding which indicates the presence of unsaturated hydrocarbon.

  • CH_3-CH_3+Br_2\rightarrow no reaction

Color of bromine water will persist on adding which indicates the absence of unsaturated hydrocarbon.
