hi frnd,
India being one of the fastest growing economy in the world needs to concentrate on multiple sectors for growth and development, sports being just one of them. The recent appalling experience of an Indian Swimmer in Para Swimming Championship yet again questions the future of sports in India.
Kanchanmala Pande, 26 year old visually impaired became the first Indian women to qualify for the World Para Swimming Championship to be held later this year in Mexico. However the journey to the silver medal won by this RBI employee was nightmarish enough with no proper support from the coach, Kanwaljeet Singh appointed by Paralympic Committee of India (PCI). The swimmer had to help herself by taking loan amount of over 5 lakhs in an unknown city of Germany due to the delay in sanctioning of the amount allocated for the tournament by Sports Authority of India (SAI). Furthermore, the PCI Vice-President Gursharan Singh added , “so, we told the athletes not to take part in Berlin or get reimbursed later”. This reiterates the worst accessibility and accountability of sports organisations to the sportsperson.
However, this is just another case of poor governance in sports industry as we all have seen history repeating itself multiple times. Like in the case of Rio Olympics 2016, only two players managed to bag medals out of 118 sent to Rio-de-Janeiro
