Inhaling air:
The rib cage moves outward and upward when we inhale air or breathe in. The diaphragm contracts or shrinks and in this manner expanding the volume of the chest cavity consequently permitting air in by the process of inhalation.
Exhaling air :
The ribs move inward and downwards when we exhale air or breathe out. The diaphragm relaxes or come back to its original position and expand as compared to inhalation state. This lessens the volume of the chest cavity and chest contracts in the process of exhalation.
