a). Ice floats on water because the density of ice is less than the water at 4°C. As we know that, the volume of ice is more then the volume of water. As we know that, volume is inversely proportional to the density.

b). Sponge is solid but it can be compressed because there is much amount of spores which contains gaseous particles.
