By the early 19th century, Calcutta, the capital of British came to be divided j to 2 oarts-

(i) The British part : White town.

(ii) The Indian part :Back town.

The Indian part was inhabited by the poor. It had congested streets and shanties. whereas the British part had sprawling and with wide spaces. The speedy industrial growth from 1850s in Calcutta, in the field of textile and Jute, attracted many British Investments. Henceforth, The population and employment opportunities of Calcutta increased tremendously.
