Overflowing garbage bins have become a common sight in a number of areas in the Fort City. Residents complain that the accumulated waste raises a stench, putting the locality in the grip of poor sanitation.
At Saidapet, which is one of the thickly populated localities in the heart of the city, residents and shopkeepers complain of poor sanitation due to irregular garbage clearance works.
For instance, the garbage bin on the Main Bazaar Road near Kanaar has been overflowing with waste for nearly three days.
“Sanitary workers have not removed the waste for the last three days. The water from the waste has started to leak from the bin. The stagnant water has raised a stench, and the place is filled with flies. We have been putting up with this hardship as our shops are located close by,” said a shopkeeper.
He added that such poor sanitary conditions can put residents at the risk of health problems.
“They should at least ensure that bleaching powder is sprayed at such spots,” he said.
Another resident of Saidapet said sometimes, sanitary workers removed garbage from the locality once in two days or once in a week and the garbage keeps mounting till then.
The canal too has not been spared as garbage from the bin falls into it, while residents too have been indiscriminately dumping waste into the channel. A few bins kept on Arcot Road, Uthirai Madha Koil Street and Kosapet are also overflowing with waste.
“Pedestrians are forced to cover their nose when they cross such overflowing bins. The bins are placed in such a criss-cross way, away from the roadside that pedestrians like me have to struggle as vehicles too keep coming by. On some days, the waste is strewn on the road near the bin,” said Sivakumar, a resident.
A damaged garbage bin at Kolakaran Street, Kosapet, has not been replaced for close to a year now, a resident of the locality said. “It has been lying on the street all these months. People just throw the waste on the street corner unmindful of the inconvenience it can cause to nearby houses. I am worried for the health of my children and family,” he added.
Another resident said that until three months ago, sanitary workers of the Vellore Corporation collected garbage on a daily basis. “Now, garbage is removed only once in a week. Garbage should be cleared everyday,” he noted.
