Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll, which is important for the light reactions in photosynthesis. The light reactions produce oxygen (which is expelled by the plant as a byproduct, but is important to us). The chloroplasts also produce products that drive the Calvin cycle, which gives us carbohydrates, as a food source.
