Plastic is, perhaps, the single most and the most dangerous pollutant of the industrial world. It is imperative that we should do something to prevent this malignant substance from gagging the environment, because that is exactly what it does to the environment. Bot how do we do it? Where do we start? I would say that we should start from the young generation. We should start by teaching them to say 'no' to plastic.
To achieve this, the first thing we should do is to make them aware of the effect of plastic on out environment and bio-systems. Plastic is not biodegradable. It takes an incredibly long time to disintegrate and merge with the soil. And when that happens it poisons the soil so much so that it is impossible for plants to grow there. so a lot of plastic matter in the land will make the land barren and we will lose the precious cultivable land.
The thin plastic bags that are used to carry things are often eaten by animals when they are used to carry edible things. The rotten fruits and vegetables that are thrown away in such plastic bags are consumed by cattle. The non-veg matter that are thrown away in these bags may be eaten by animals like dogs and cats. The result is that their digestive systems will be blocked and they will die.
These plastic bags that are thrown out indiscriminately on the roads will block the drainage system resulting in the flooding of the sewage, thereby causing contaminated surroundings and freshwater sources. This will cause epidemics like cholera.
So it is imperative that we should find a solution for this problem. The three 'R' method should be followed - reduce, re-use and recycle. Reduce the use of plastic, Reuse them as many times as possible and at last recycle them. Students, as the citizens of tomorrow should be well aware of these facts and should be ready to act accordingly. Tomorrow's world will be safe in your hands.
