Us friction desirable

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

It depends, I know why they ask that question in school. They just want you to see that friction has both sides, good and evil ( like everything else in the universe, but this is not psychology) . See we tend to imagine friction as evil force which stops us from moving that heavy rock in front of our crush (embarrassing). Okay enough kidding.

Friction resists relative motion. So yes in worn out machines, and makes it harder to move heavier objects.

But it also makes movement possible at all!!!

See the reason you can walk, or your car can move, or you don't slide to the back of the bus and die when it starts moving... is FRICTION!

when you try to walk in a frictionless world, you would just slip (try walking on frozen lake, that's close enough)

I hope you got a general idea.

Many machines don't work efficiently due to friction within their moving parts. Hence, friction is desirable as well as undesirable at times. That is the reason it is also called "A necessary evil".

Hope this helps.
