Use of disposable cups made of clay(kulhads) is discouraged because making them on large scale will result in loss of fertility of topsoil.

  • Kulhads are considered to be biodegradable as they are made up of clay or mud. However, they have certain drawbacks.
  • Firstly, the fertile topsoil is used to make them and so making them in huge number would lead to degradation of the soil quality.
  • The organic carbon content present gets removed while baking the kulhads. Therefore, even if they are ultimately discarded in the soil, they are of no use as the quality is already degraded.
  • Secondly, the carbon footprint associated with its production is to be estimated as it has an impact on the environment. Also, there are emissions during the baking step of making kulhads.
