Use of pulses in crop rotation has an impact on sustainability because pulses are leguminous plants which means that they have rhizobium bacteria in their nodules which help to convert atmospheric nitrogen into other nitrogen compounds which plants can absorb. This nitrogen is stored in roots so when plants die they give nitrogen to the soil.
