Prepositions

Prepositions are the words that combine noun, pronouns or phrases to other words in a sentence. It shows the bonding of the words or phrases with other words in the sentence with regard to time, space, movement etc.

Examples:-

  • Please stand after me in the queue.
  • I enjoy being among my family members.

Prepositions are of 3 types:-

  • Preposition of place
  • Preposition of time
  • Preposition of direction/movement

1) Preposition of place:-

  • The vase is kept at the edge of the window sill.
  • I will sit between the two of you.

2) Preposition of time:-

  • I wake up at 6 a.m.
  • We will meet on Thursday.

3) Preposition of direction/movement:-

  • She went to the school.
  • Walk down the street and then take a left turn.

Simple prepositions:- Single-word propositions are called simple prepositions. Some examples are on, in, at, by, to, with, from, off, before, after, till, about, over, under etc.

Examples:-

  • Did you hear about Reena's sister?
  • I go for swimming in the evening.

Compound prepositions:- These are prepositions formed by two or more words acting as one preposition. Some of the examples are according to, on behalf of, by means of, in case of, in accordance with, with respect to, on account of etc.

Examples:-

  • In case of fire we should use staircase.
  • What is the cause of extinction of dinosaurs.
