Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born on 27 August, 1910 to Albanian parent at Skopje. In 1928, at the age of 18, she joined an Irish convent and after studying there for a year, she was sent to Darjeeling, India, for missionary work.

In 1931, she began teaching at a girl’s school in Calcutta (present day Kolkata). After teaching for 17 years, she decided to work among the poor slums of Calcutta. She continued with her work helping the sick, destitute and downtrodden, until 1996.

In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Fondly known as Mother Theresa, she breathed her last on 5 September, 1997.
