Robert Whitaker played an important role in classification of the micro organisms.

He trusted the cellular biology and ecology to classify the living species on their characteristics.

Initially, Whitaker believed in three kingdom system but later on increased it to 5 depending on the distinction between the prokaryotes and eurokaryots.

He conducted research on the biochemical cycles of the organisms to derive conclusion.

R.H. Whittaker was responsible for the 5 kingdom classification. This is considered natural and scientific.

The five kingdoms are,

  1. Kingdom Monera
  2. Kingdom Protista
  3. Kingdom Fungi
  4. Kingdom Plantae
  5. Kingdom Animalia

Classification:

  • Bacteria are  prokaryotic and unicellular. They are placed in Kingdom Monera.
  • Protozoans like amoeba are unicellular, but eukaryotic organisms. They are placed in Kingdom Protista.
  • Fungi like yeast and algae are Heterotrophic, Eukaryotic and Multicellular organisms. They are placed in Kingdom Fungi.
