The comparison of chemical and physical properties between transition elements and group 1 elements are described below on the basis of some physical properties- atomic size, ionisation energy, electron affinity. And chemical properties- non-metallic character, acidic and basic behaviour :
∆∆Physical properties-
- Definition:
- Transition elements are elements of group 3 to 12. They are also called d-block elements.
- Group 1 elements are elements of the s- block are called normal/representative elements.
- Atomic size: distance between the centre of nucleus of atom to it's outermost shell. On moving across a period, the atomic size of elements decreases.
Hence, atomic size of group 1 elements are comparatively bigger than that of transition elements.
- Ionisation energy: the energy required to remove an atom from the valence orbit of any free atom in gaseous state. It increases along the period from left to right.
hence, ionisation elements have higher ionisation affinity than that of group 1. (however, there are some exceptions)
- Electron affinity: amount of energy released when a gaseous atom recieves an electron to form gaseous anion. It increases from left to right.
hence, electron affinity of transition elements are higher than that of group 1 elements, except the group 2 elements as they are comparatively lower.
∆∆Chemical properties:
- Atomic number: vol. occupied by one mole atom of an element at melting point. It decreses along the period from left right upto some elements, however than than starts increasing.
We can say that group 1 elements have higher atomic number than transition elements.
- Acidic and basic character of oxides and hydroxides: since ionisation energy increases in a period ,the group 1 elements are strongly basic compared to transition elements.
- Non metallic character , oxidising and acidic character of oxides of elements increase from left to right i.e. these characters are higher in group 1 than that of transition elements.
