Uses of Nonmetals

The minority elements on the periodic table usually located on the upper right side are called non-metals. They have properties opposite to metals. They cannot be reshaped easily, they are poor conductors of electricity and heat. The most percent of non metal present in the atmosphere volume wise is nitrogen. ‘

Almost 78% of nitrogen is present in the atmosphere. It is used in agriculture. How? Ammonia produced in industries is the key ingredient of fertilizers. Apart from this let’s see other uses of nonmetals

Uses of nonmetals

Amorphous form of carbon, charcoal is used for ultrafiltration in modern water filters. Also, it is used in refrigerators to control bad odour. Below are the nonmetals uses in different fields:

1. Uses of nonmetals in our daily life:

Oxygen which is 21% by volume helps in the respiration process. It is also used for manufacturing of steel and provides high temperature in metal fabrication process. Oxygen cylinders are used in hospital.

Chlorine is useful in removing stains and colour patches as a bleaching agent. Various graded plastics and insecticides are made with chlorine. It helps in purification of water. How? Adding chlorine to drinking water kills the bacterias.

Helium is used as inert gas for scientific experiments. It is also used in weather balloons.

Iodine helps from throat infections and is used as antiseptic on wounds and cuts.

2. Nonmetals used in fertilizers:

Fertilizers contain nitrogen. It helps in plant growth. It enhances the rate of plant growth. Non Metal phosphorus is also used for better plant growth. These two nonmetals play a major role in plant growth.

3. Nonmetals used in crackers:

Sulphur and phosphorus are used in fireworks.

  2. phosphorus is used in matchbox industry and in fertilizers
  3. iodine is used as an antiseptic.
  4. sulphur is used for making crackers and sulfuric acid.
  5. oxygen is essential for the survival of all living beings .
  6. diamond in the form of carbon is used in making jewellery is in cutting glass and for grinding the tools.
  7. graphite also form of carbon is used in batteries and in pencils.
