USES OF CARBON DIOXIDE - DEFINITION

1.Large quantities of solid carbon dioxide (i.e. in the form of dry ice) are used in processes requiring large scale refrigeration. 

2. Carbon dioxide is also used in fire extinguishers as a desirable alternative to water for most fires.

3. It is a constituent of medical gases as it promotes exhalation. It is also used in carbonated drinks.

USES OF NITROGEN - EXAMPLE

Nitrogen is used to make fertilisers, nitric acid, nylon, dyes and explosives. Nitrogen gas is also used to provide an unreactive atmosphere. It is used in this way to preserve foods, and in the electronics industry during the production of transistors and diodes.

Air is a mixture of different gases and dust particles. Percentages wise distribution of different gases are: Nitrogen - 78%, Oxygen - 21%, Argon - 0.9% and remaining portion is occupied by various other gases like, carbon dioxide, neon, helium, sulphur dioxide etc. 

Air also contains water vapour. Amount of water vapour in air is called absolute humidity.  This amount of space in air that can hold water changes depending on the temperature and pressure. 

Smoke is made up small particles, gases and water vapor. Water vapor makes up the majority of smoke. The remainder includes carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, irritant volatile organic compounds, air toxics and very small particles.
