What is concave mirror?
The mirror whose surface is recessed inward is called as concave mirror. Concave mirror is also called as converging mirror.
Uses of concave mirror:
- A concave mirror is used as a reflector in torches, search lights head lights of motor vehicles etc, to get parallel beam of light.
- A concave mirror is used as doctors head mirror to focus light on the body parts like eyes, ears, nose, throat etc.
- A concave mirror is also used as shaving mirror.
- A concave mirror is used by the dentist to observe large images of the teeth of the patients.
Concave Mirror:
A concave mirror is a river with curved surface bulging inwards or curved inwards. It is called converging mirror.
If a part of a hollow glass sphere is cut and the cut part of the sphere is coated outside with silver or similar material, then its inner surface reflects the entire light incident on it, and thus, forms a mirror. Since the inner surface is a concave surface, the mirror so formed is called a concave mirror.
If an object is placed close to a concave mirror such that the distance between the mirror and the object is less than its focal length, then a magnified and virtual image is formed.
Due to this property, concave mirrors are used as shaving mirrors, and by dentists to view clearly the inner parts of the mouth.
Concave mirrors have many uses. Some of them are:-
→Concave mirrors are usedin reflecting telescopes.
→They are also used to provide a magnified image of the face for applying make-up or shaving.
→Used by dentists to see an enlarged image of the tooth.
→Concave mirrors are used in motor vehicle headlights.
→These are used in solar furnaces.
