Halogens(Group 17)

All the elements present in group 17 of our modern periodic table is called Halogens. They are non-metals. They require just 1 electron to attain the electronic configuration of their nearest inert or noble gas. They are used widely for the following purposes:

→ Iodine(\bold{I_{2}}) is used in antiseptic creams as it is capable to kill the germs.


→ Chlorine is one of the ingredients of a bleach.


→ Compounds of flurorine are used in the toothpastes we use daily as it prevent the teeth from rotting.


→ Fluroine is used while making detergents.


→ Chlorine is used for purifying drinking water.


→ Chlorine is used in making painkillers.


→ Bromine is used in producing dyes which are widely used in textile industries.


→ Bromine is of great use in coal power plants as it reduces mercury levels too.


→ Bromine is a component of pesticides as well.


→ Iodine is present in our blood as it acts like an antioxidant.


→ Astatine is used in treating cancer.


→ Iodine and Bromine are used in small amounts in certain lamps.
