Answer:

Metals are usually hard, dense conductors, often exhibiting a shiny luster. Metallic elements readily lose electrons to form positive ions. Except for mercury, metals are solids at room temperature and pressure

The nonmetals are on the upper right-hand side of the periodic table. Nonmetals are typically poor electrical and thermal conductors and don't have a metallic luster. They can be found as solids, liquids, or gases under ordinary conditions.

Question :-

Uses of metal and non metals.

Answer :-

Uses of Metals :-

1. Copper and aluminium, due to their electrical and thermal conductivity, are used to make utensils, cooking vessels, electrical wires and appliances .

2. Zinc is used to make dry cells.

3. Mercury is used in an instrument called sphygmanometer used to measure blood pressure as well as in thermometer and barometers to measure temperature and pressure respectively .

4. Iron is used in making bridge, pipes, rods, and sheets used in construction work, gates, railings, etc.

5. Various tools, machines andachune parts like screws, nails, bolts, chains are also made up of iron.

6. Zinc is used in the process of galvanisation to prevent articles from rusting.

7. Copper and zinc are important constituents of alloys such as brass, bronze and German silver.

8. Chromium is used in electroplating.

9. Aluminium file has extensive use in packing.

10. Aluminium is also used to make parts and bodies of aircrafts and automobiles.

11. Lead is used for making batteries and electrodes.

12. Magnesium, due to it's burning with white dazzling light is used to make fireworks.

13. Gold, silver and platinum are called Noble metals as they do not react easily with anything and are used to make jewelry and other articles.

14. Alloys of various metals are used to make articles of daily use. For example, steel - an alloy of iron, carbon, nickel and chromium is used to make utensils. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc and bronze of copper and tin.

Uses of Non-Metals :-

1. Hydrogen and helium are the main constituents of matter of planetary bodies.

2. Hydrogen is a non-polluting efficient fuel.

3. Oxygen is needed for the living being to breathe in.

4. Oxygen is a must for all the burning processes, even inside our body for processes like respiration.

5. Carbon is essential part of all the living matter.

6. Most of the fuels contain carbon.

7. Sulphur is used for manufacturing sulphuric acid which is a very important chemical.

8. Sulphur is also used in manufacturing of skin medicines and ointment due to its fungicidal properties.

9. Graphite is used to make pencil leads and electrodes of dry cells.

10. Phosphorus is used in manufacturing matchstick, fireworks and fertilisers.

11. Chlorine is used as disinfectant of water. It also has bleaching properties and is used to make bleaching powder.

12. Iodine is important to prevent a disease called 'goitre'. So it is consumed as iodised salt.

13. Nitrogen is the important constituent of proteins. It is very important for plant also.

14. Nitrogen is also used to preserve blood.

15. Helium is used by the divers to respire underwater, along with oxygen.
