) Microorganisms in food
Microorganisms are used in the production of fermented food and beverages. E.g. Yeast,Penicillium, Lactobacillus.
2) Microorganisms in Medicine
They also have immense potential in the field of medicine. They are used industrially for the production of antibiotics, vaccines. Insuline, growth hormones and diagnostic kits. E.g. E. coli, Polio virus.
3) Microorganisms in Industry
Industrially important acids, enzymes, pigments are produced with the help of microorganisms. E.g. Aspergillus niger, Bacillus subtilis.
4) Microorganisms in Agriculture
Microorganisms have been ruling in agriculture from the past century. They are used as Biofertilizers and Biopesticides. E.g. Rhizobium, Bacillus, Azotobacter.
5) Microorganisms in Environment
Ability of microorganisms to degrade toxic materials like oil, petroleum, plastic, etc has opened a new field of research. E.g. Pseudomonas, Alcanivorax.
6) Microorganisms in Air
They are also responsible for degradation of dead cells shed from the skin of humans. If it were not for them, we would haveto walk on piles of dead skin cells.
7) Microorganisms in symbiotic associations
In nature, microorganisms have been found to be associated with higher organisms in a symbiotic relationship with diverse functions. E.g. Lichens, Mycorrhizae.
8) Microorganisms in Biotechnology
Microorganisms have evolved as a potential alternate source of energy. Microorganisms are used to produce biofuels like biodiesel, bioalcohol and also microbial fuel cell. E.g. Algae
9) Microorganisms in evolution
We are all here because of an organism that changed the world. and also paved the way for complex life on earth. That organism is Cyanobacteria. It converted the anaerobic conditions on primitive earth into aerobic conditions by the process of photosynthesis. This lead to the evolution of different organisms and transformation of earth to support life.
10) Microorganisms in waste treatment
Microorganisms play a crucial role is managing and treating domestic and industrial waste.
1- Microorganisms help us in making alcohol. E.g. Yeast, Zymomonas mobilis, Schizosaccharomyces.
2- Microorganisms help us in bakery. E.g. Yeast.
3- Microorganisms is used in making medicines. E.g. In Antibiotics- Penicilium Notatum.
4- Microorganisms is used in making curd/Yoghurt. E.g. Streptococcus Thermophilus or Lactobacillus.
5- Microorganisms fix atmospheric nitrogen (NO2) to the soil. E.g. Rhizobium or Frankia.
6- Microorganisms help us in researching on diseases, such as in vaccination.
7- Microorganisms replenish the soil. Microorganisms play critical roles in Earth's biogeochemical cycles as they are responsible for decomposition.
8- Microorganisms are essential tools in biotechnology, biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology. E.g. Yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and fission yeast (Schizosaccharomyces pombe).
9- Microorganisms are used in energy production. Microorganisms are used in fermentation to produce ethanol and in biogas reactors to produce methane. Scientists are researching the use of algae to produce liquid fuels and bacteria to convert various forms of agricultural and urban waste into usable fuels (Biofuel).
10- Microorganisms are used in Water Treatment/Sewage Treatment.
Microorganisms play important role in our day today's life. They are helpful in many ways to us. Here are some examples
1] Microbes play important role in defense: The oodles of microbes that live on and inside us protect us from pathogens simply by taking up space. By occupying spots where nastiest could get access to and thrive, good microbes keep us healthy.
2] Food: Production of many foods is possible with the help of microorganism. For example foods like bread, beer and cheese are produced with the help of yeast. Similarly bacteria are involved in the production of butter, yogurt, many kinds of chocolates, coffee and other foods of daily life. Microorganisms like years are also used to prepare beverages like alcohol e.g. Beer, wine
3] Medicine: It is very difficult to decode the human genome if any disorders occur in it as humans are the eukaryotic organisms. It means their body consists of various types pf cells and they are all differentiated into different tissues and organs. Microorganisms have made it possible to make such medicines which when enter the body, target the defected genes and make healthy changes in them and they become functional again. There is a common example of human insulin. Insulin is an antibiotic which is prescribed for the diabetic patients. Now it is possible to synthesize the insulin in microorganisms like bacteria and yeast. These microorganisms are inserted in the body in the form of vectors and cure the defected genes. Due to the availability of microorganisms in the environment, scientists have made use of them for making many medicines and drugs and also used them for drug delivery.
