But I would suppose that “would” is more polite, because it expresses the idea of probability, and of willingness, and of the desire that something be done, whereas “could” is more in the realm of ability (yes I can). And according to the American Heritage Dictionary, “would” is used to make a polite request.

WOULD

Wish - I would like to see that book. Refusal - She wouldn't disclose anything. Determination - He would have his own way.Past habit - He would walk on the street for hours.Willingness (in the past) - She said that she would help me.Polite speech - Would you mind helping me out ?Uncertainty - Had we met, I would have told her everything.

COULD

SHOULD

Duty or Obligation - We should help the poor.Advice - You shouldn't laugh at her.Supposition, Possibility, Condition - If it should rain, the school will remain closed.Negative purpose (after lest) - Take heed lest you should fall.
