Using a cathode ray tube, Thomson confirmed that atoms must have an overall positive charge. atoms are made of particles that have a negative charge. electrons in atoms must have varying amounts of energy. electrons are only found in the nucleus.

CATHODE RAY DISCHARGE TUBE
In this experiment , scientists take a tube with one end having a negative ion cathode and the other end being a positive ion anode. Only under highvoltage and low pressure , we can find the cathode ray , which emerges from the cathode and moves towards the anode. To check for its presence , we simply make a hole in the anode material and place a coating of zinc sulphide behind the anode. When the cathode rays hit the coating , we find a glowing colour.
We can conclude that the cathode ray that emerges from the cathode and moving towards the anode is due to the presence of the electron. This is supported by the fact that the behaviour of cathode rays under any magnetic influence is pretty close to the expected theory .
So we conclude that there is negatively charged particles. On the other hand protons were discovered by the modified cathode ray discharge experiment.
