ᴍɪᴄʀᴏᴏʀɢᴀɴɪsᴍ—

Organism that are so small that they can only be seen through a microscope are called microorganism.

These organism have a great impact on humans in many ways. Some can cause illness whereas other can cure diseases. Some supply as with food whereas other spoil our food.

The study of microorganisms is known as microbiology. Scientists who study microorganisms are known as microbiologist.

ᴛʏᴘᴇs ᴏғ ᴍɪᴄʀᴏᴏʀɢᴀɴɪsᴍ—

microorganism can be divided into five major groups. These are—

♦ Bacteria (singular : bacterium)
♦ Algae (singular : alga)
♦ Protozoa (singular : protozoan)
♦ Fungi (singular : fungus)
♦ Viruses (singular : virus)

ʙᴀᴄᴛᴇʀɪᴀ–

They are among the smallest and oldest organisms on our planet and are found in four different shapes. These are -

• Rod shaped (bacilli)
• Spherical (cocci)
• Curved (commas)
• Spiral (spirilla)

ᴀʟɢᴀᴇ–

The term algae refers to simple plant like organism that have cell walls and chlorophyll within the cells. They makes their own food by photosynthesis. They have no roots, stems or leaves.

Algae can be unicellular or multicellular. Chlorella, Chlamydomonas and diatoms are the example of microscope algae.

ᴘʀᴏᴛᴏᴢᴏᴀ–

Protozoa and unicellular organism that has animal like characteristics. They can move from place to place. They capture and eat food. Amoeba, Paramecium and euglena are examples of protozoa.

ғᴜɴɢɪ–

Plant like organism that do not contain chlorophyll are called fungi. Yeasts and moulds are examples of microscopic fungi.

Viruses are smaller than any known cell. They are so small that they cannot be seen by a light microscope and usually studied with the help of powerful microscope called electron microscope. Viruses do not have a cellular structure like other microorganisms. Tobacco mosaic virus(TMV) and Human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) are examples of viruses.
