Inverse Function

Determining if the graph of a function is invertible

  • A graph that passes the vertical line test represents a function.
  • A graph that passes the  horizontal line test tells us that function has an inverse (function).

Definition:

Let f be a one-one function from x onto y.

The inverse function denoted by f^{-1} is a function from y onto x and is defined by  x=f^{-1}(y) .

Graph:

The graph of the inverse is a reflection over the line y=x.
