Question :- using division method,show that ( -1 + x ) is a factor of (-1 + x^4 ) and verify ?

Solution :-

Dividing (x⁴ - 1) by (x - 1) , we get,

x - 1 ) x⁴ - 1 (x³ + x² + x + 1

x⁴ - x³

x³ - 1

x³ - x²

x² - 1

x² - x

x - 1

x - 1

0

Since we get remainder as 0, therefore, we can conclude that, ( -1 + x ) is a factor of (-1 + x^4 ) .

verification :-

if (x - a) is a factor of f(x), then f(a) = 0 .

so,

→ f(x) = (-1 + x⁴)

→ f(1) = (-1 + 1⁴)

→ f(1) = (-1 + 1)

→ f(1) = 0 (verify).

Hence, ( -1 + x ) is a factor of (-1 + x^4 ) .
