(a-b)^2=(a^2-2ab+b^2)

i) 196

196 = 200 - 4

Therefore (196) squared = (200 - 4) whole squared.

This is equal to, 200^2 -2*200*4 + 4^2

40000 - 1600 + 16

38400 + 16

38416

ii) 689

689^2 = (700 - 1)^2

= 490000 -2*700*1 + 1

= 490000- 1400 + 1

= 488600+1

= 488601
