Using Lenz's law, predict the direction of induced current in conducting rings 1 and 2 when
current in the wire is (i) steadily decreasing, and (ii) steadily increasing.

By Right hand thumb rule the direction of magnetic field through ring 1 , due to current in wire will be perpendicular outward from the plane of paper .If upper face is south then direction of current in ring 1 is clockwise . Due to same reason the direction of induced current in ring 2 will be anticlockwise.

Explanation:

When current is present in the wire, the magnetic field at the center of ring 1 is pointing out of the paper while it is into the paper for center of ring 2.

(i) When current is steadily decreasing in the wire, the current in the ring 1 would be induced in anticlockwise direction and clockwise in ring 2 in order to compensate for the decreasing strength of the magnetic field.

(ii) Similarly, when the current is steadily increasing in the wire, the current in ring 1 will flow clockwise and in ring 2, it will be anticlockwise to compensate for the increasing magnetic field strength.
