Answer:

When an organism shows a dominant character for a trait, and its genotype is unknown, cross is performed of this organism with a known homozygous recessive trait in order to know the genotype of the former. This is known as Test cross.

Explanation:

  • A plant which displays tall phenotype may have genotype TT or Tt. This phenotypically showing tall plant, is crossed with a known recessive plant, having genotype tt, in order to find out the genotype TT or Tt of the former plant.
  • The phenotypic ratio received will determine the genotype of the plant.
  • If all the offsprings are tall, then the genotype will be different and if, 50% of the offspring shows tall phenotype, and 50% shows dwarf phenotype, then the genotype will be different.
  • Let’s understand this will the help of a Punnett square.

So, this is the test cross with the help of a Punnett square along with definition and nature of offsprings.
