using the identity (a-b)^2 =(a^2-2ab+b^2) evaluate (491)^2

(500 - 9) ^2

= (500)^2 + (2)^-2(500)(2)

=250000 + 4 - 2 (1000)

= 250004 - 2000

= 248004..
