Using the periodic table predict the formula of the compound formed by the following pairs of elements.
a) Mg and S
b) Si and Br.​

Explanation:

(a) The atomic number of Mg is 12 and according to its electronic configuration, it has 2 electrons in outermost cell.  

The atomic number of S is 16 and according to its electronic configuration, it has 6 electrons in outermost cell.

So, the compound formed will be MgS so that both of them can complete their octet.

(b) The atomic number of Si is 14 and according to its electronic configuration, it has 4 electrons in the outermost cell.

The atomic number of Br is 35 and according to its electronic configuration, it has 7 electrons in the outermost cell.  

So, the compound formed will be SiBr4 so that they can complete their octet.
