The hybridization of OF2 is sp3 and the oxidizing state of O and F are +2 and -1 respectively.
- O₈ = 1s², 2s², 2p⁴
- One 2s and three 2p orbitals will be hybridized to for four new sp3 hybridized orbitals.
- Each fluorine atom gives one electron to each singly occupied hybrid orbital forming two single bonds.
- There are 2 lone pairs left.
- Using VSEPR theory, OF2 molecule with 2 bond pairs and 2 lone pairs is bent in shape.
- The oxidation state of oxygen is +2 and of fluorine is -1 as it is more electronegative.
