Bismillah Khan was born as the second child to Paigambar Khan and Mitthan. He was named Qamaruddin with the goal that his name would sound like the name of his senior sibling, Shamsuddin. In any case, when his granddad, Rasool Baksh Khan, considered him to be a child, he articulated "Bismillah" and subsequently he came to be known as Bismillah Khan. His father used to be a Shehnai player. He used to play Shehnai in the court of Maharaja Keshav Prasad Singh of Dumraon. Naturally, Bismillah was acquainted with Shehnai at an exceptionally youthful age. He grew up observing his dad play the breeze instrument and chose to emulate his example. When he was six years of age, he started his voyage to Varanasi, where he was prepared by his uncle, Ali Baksh 'Vilayatu'. Bismillah Khan started his vocation by playing at different stages appears. He got his first significant break in 1937 when he played at a show at the All India Music Conference in Calcutta.
