Usually 'average speed' means the ratio of distance covered to the time elapsed. However, sometimes the phrase 'average speed' can mean the magnitude of the average velocity? Are the two same? Explain.​

No , average speed is scalar quantity whereas average velocity is vector quantity. It will be equal if the body moves in a straight path.
