Answer:

Mosquitoes find winter hiding places along frozen stream banks and among tree roots.

Mosquitoes usually disappear when cold weather comes, but they don’t go away for good. They have several strategies for surviving cold weather.

Answer:

Usually lizards and mosquitoes are not present in the very cold places because they are poikilotherms ; i.e cold-blooded animals.

( See explanation )

Explanation:

Why lizards are not seen in very cold places ?

Lizards are poikilothermal (cold-blooded) and their body temperature fluctuates with outside temperature. When it’s extremely cold, lizards face the danger of either their blood freezing up or their temperature dropping drastically, as a result of which they become immobile and can easily fall prey to enemies. Hence, lizards hibernate in cracks of walls or beneath the soil. During this period, their basal metabolic rate is greatly reduced.

Why mosquitoes are not seen in very cold places ?

Some species of mosquito lay eggs during the late summer or fall in areas where the ground is moist. These hardy insects remain dormant in the soil until spring. Other mosquito species survive the winter in the larval stage. The colder temperatures suspend development by inducing a state of diapauses, which slows the insect’s metabolism. In some cases, mosquitoes survive the winter as adults. After they mate in the fall, the male dies. The female survives by overwintering in a protected area like a hollowed-out log. Mosquitoes will generally be absent from the time that temperatures drop below 10 degree Celsius until it rises above 27 degree Celsius .
